Optimizing the management of acid gas flaring in Iran

Considering the high concentration of air pollutants in the Asaluyeh region of Bushehr province, and the urgent need of the region to manage ambient air quality, especially SO2 and CO2 emissions, the collection and treatment of acid gas flaring of Asaluyeh refineries is a top priority. In this study, the economic considerations and cost-benefit analysis of the collection and processing of acid gas flaring in the Asaluyeh region have been discussed. The process includes compression and injection of acid gas into the sour gas pipeline stretched from Asaluyeh to Aghajari oil field in Khuzestan province to inject it into the oil fields. The approach is to consider 5 different compression scenarios and introduce a heat recovery system for all 5 of them. It should be noted that after collecting these gases, 70212 kg/h of SO2 and 56050 kg/h of CO2 emissions have been reduced in the region. The most optimal compression scenario from the economic and environmental point of view is the use of 3 compressors along with the heat recovery system, in which case the total investment cost is 17 million dollars and the net present value of the project, considering the life span of 10 years and the discount rate of 15 %, will be 2.38 billion dollars environmental wise and 12.2 million dollars economical wise for 10 years.
