High Frequency Behavior Evaluation of Grounding System in Wind Farms

چکیده :
Wind turbines are extremely vulnerable to direct and indirect lightning strikes due to their height and installation locations. Therefore, it is worthy to investigate the performance of wind farms against such a phenomenon. To evaluate detailed transient behavior of a wind farm caused by lightning, it requires that all of its components are modeled. Grounding system is one of the most important components of a power system which should be modeled in transient states. In this paper, both nonlinear behavior of soil ionization and frequency dependent parameters are simultaneously included in grounding system. Also, high frequency models of other equipment such as wind turbine, transformers, down conductor, tower, horizontal conductor, vertical rods, surge arresters, and underground cable have been considered and carried out using EMTP-RV software for computation of transient ground potential rise and transient over voltages. Furthermore, two wind turbines connected to each other through the frequency-dependent cable are studied in two cases of direct and indirect lightning strikes, 200KA and 10/350 μs, for the worst case scenario. The results show that modification of grounding system configuration and soil parameters can considerably improve the maximum transient over voltages. In addition, the obtained results and procedures can be useful to design the lightning protection system in power network and to mitigate undesirable induced over voltages on electrical and sensitive electronic devices. The proposed procedure is validated to compare the calculated results with the presented results and simulations found in literature which show good agreement
