Design, Construction and Analysis of a Hybrid Photobioreactor for Enhancing Microalgae Cultivation Using Computational Fluid Dynamics

چکیده :
Microalgae cells are precious biological resources for biofuel production through photosynthesis. Photobioreactors play an important role in increasing the microalgae biomass production. Photobioreactors' performance, lifetime, and operation costs are affected by crucial parameters including light, mixing, mass transfer, temperature, pH, and capital and operating costs. In this study, a hybrid open-closed PBR was designed via Gambit software and constructed with an open pond volume of 100 liters. Fluid velocity and pressure were evaluated through computational fluid dynamics. The simulation was conducted using Ansys Fluent. The results showed that the fluid velocity ranged between 0.5 and 0.3 m.s-1, which is suitable for optimal algae cultivation. Additionally, a reduction in pressure occurred from 2.3e+3 Pa at the inlet and a decrease in atmospheric pressure at the outlet. Growth analysis was carried out over a month by measuring optical density. Findings contribute to the development of a practical method that enhances microalgae biomass production efficiently and cost-effectively.
